Improvised explosive devices have been used in almost every terrorist attack that has taken place in the last forty years.
The threat is real. We are vulnerable. But awareness, preparedness, and planning can make a real difference in making our public spaces safe and secure.
The first line of defense is you. Establish and rehearse plans, procedures, evacuation protocols, as well as potential locations that could be used as staging or assembly sites for both evacuation and first responders. Preparing and planning for the worst will help us be more safe and secure for the future.
Be prepared, be aware, be safe. If you see something, say something. Make the call.
If you see or suspect an IED:
- Do not touch it or attempt to move it, report it and clear the area
- Communicate calmly and clearly with management, security and police
- Place a solid physical object between you and the threat and stay low to the ground
- Do not use two-way radios or cell phones near the suspected IED
- Move all patrons at least 500 feet away from the threat
- Check for secondary devices
