Rachel Maddow Explains Why Bombing Suspect Was Not Read Miranda Rights (VIDEO)

Rachel-MaddowKendall Coffey, former U.S. Attorney, talks with Rachel Maddow about the “Public Safety Exception” under which terrorist suspects are not read their Miranda rights and how it applies to the case of the surviving Boston Marathon bombing suspect.

Maddow began by explaining that “the Obama administration has extended the reach of that public safety exemption, so it essentially can last longer to attend to the type of public safety threats that could accrue in terrorism cases.”

She went on to note that bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was not arrested under enemy combatant status and “at some point he will be read his rights. He’s an American citizen,” but will eventually be tried in a federal court within the civilian justice system and not in Guantanamo.

Correy elaborated that  the Obama administration is attempting to establish that “we don’t need to ship everyone down to Guantanamo” that civilian courts are adequate for terrorist suspects.
