Bill Maher closed out his show tonight with an appeal to people worked up over how seriously the U.S. should charge Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the Boston bombing suspect currently in custody. Maher said the U.S. can’t be so overzealous in how it reacts to a bunch of “losers,” and declared that terrorists shouldn’t “scare us into overreacting.”
Maher sent a message directly to conservatives who seem to be suggesting that the justice system can’t be trusted to handle Tsarnaev propertly, mockingly saying that he “fucked with the wrong peace-loving, Christian people.” He dismissed all the talk of labeling him as an enemy combatant, saying that it’s not as if the bomber were Bond villains. Maher pointed out they had no escape plan and “could not foresee that the Boston Marathon would be photographed.”
He likened labeling everyone who commits horrible acts an enemy combatant to calling everyone who appears in pornos a “porn star.” He used the words of the Tsarnaevs’ uncle to declare that the U.S. is really in a war against “losers,” going off on all the “fuck-ups” that the nation has had to deal with in the past few years.
Maher said that the ultimate plan of terrorism is to “scare us into overreacting,” and wryly commented that the one thing terrorists have really succeeded in blowing up has been our “balance sheet.”
