Central Florida News 13 is reporting that a violent confrontation between FBI agents and a friend of Boston bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev resulting in the fatal shooting of Ibragim Todashev, 26, in Orlando.
Friends of Todashev say he is from Chechnya and knew Boston bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev but was not involved in the bombings.
In a statement, FBI spokesman Paul Bresson said the FBI agent acted on an imminent threat and shot Todashev. The FBI agent was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries and the FBI released the following updated statement:
“The FBI is currently reviewing a shooting incident involving an FBI Special Agent. Based on preliminary information, the incident occurred in Orlando, Florida during the early morning hours of 5/22/2013. The agent along with two Massachusetts State Police troopers and other law enforcement personnel were interviewing an individual in connection with the Boston Marathon bombing investigation when a violent confrontation was initiated by the individual. During the confrontation, the individual was killed and the agent sustained non-life threatening injuries. As this incident is under review, we have no further details at this time.”
The Orlando Sentinel is reporting that the FBI told them that an “FBI agent, along with two Massachusetts State Police troopers and other law enforcement personnel, were interviewing 27-year-old Ibragim Todashev when a violent confrontation was initiated by Todashev.”
The Orlando Sentinel further reports that:
“Federal law enforcement sources said Todashev — who knew bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev through mixed martial arts in Boston — “primarily” was being asked about a Sept. 11, 2011, triple murder in Waltham, Mass., because officials believe he and Tsarnaev may have had a role in cutting the throats of three men and sprinkling marijuana over the bodies.”
Khusn Taramiv, a friend of Todashev’s, told local news channel WESH.com that he and Todashev were interviewed by the FBI for nearly three hours on Tuesday:
“(The FBI) took me and my friend, (Ibragim Todashev). They were talking to us, both of us, right? And they said they need him for a little more, for a couple more hours, and I left, and they told me they’re going to bring him back. They never brought him back.”
Taramiv told WESH that he told Todashev he thought he was going to get shot but that Todashev told him everything was going be fine and not to worrry. Taramiv said he left the apartment and when he returned several hours later he learned about the shooting
