A devotee of crossword puzzles is upset after the answer to a question in the Sunday paper’s puzzle includes an incendiary Jewish slur.
Mark Cooper rarely ends up horribly offended before he can finish his daily crossword puzzle. But that’s exactly what happened Friday when he saw the clue for number 32 Down in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution included a racist term. (The crossword is syndicated from the Los Angeles Times.)
He said he knew it was technically referring to the character in Shakespeare’s play The Merchant of Venice. Shylock was a greedy moneylender, and he was Jewish. His name now doubles as a racial slur.
The Anti-Defamation League has confirmed they received several complaints about the crossword as well.
WXIA’s Mark MacAfee reports.
