Bradley University announced that 5-year-old Johnah Sahrs and his 9-year-0ld brother Jarret signed letters of intent to join the Bradley Braves for the 2013-14 season this past Friday.
Bradley University pulled out all the bells and whistles for the boys, conducting a special signing ceremony at the university’s Renaissance Coliseum.
According to a press release issued by the Illinois university:
Johnah Sahrs, 5, is a kindergarten student at Dunlap Grade School and is in recovery from Stage 4 High Risk Neuroblastoma. He had surgery in 2012 and has been undergoing treatment for the past 18 months as part of his journey to recovery. Jarret Sahrs, 9, has been an intimate witness to his brother’s life-threatening illness.
The brothers each have their own player bio on the Bradley University website (Johnah’s page and Jarret’s) and the university’s press release went on to note:
A 3-foot-4-inch guard, Johnah Sahrs will wear uniform number 1. He becomes both the youngest and the shortest player in Bradley Basketball history. Standing 4-foot-5-inches, Jarret Sahrs will wear uniform number 32. Senior guard Mason Alwan, sophomore guard Anthony Fields, senior center Jordan Prosser and freshman guard Jordan Swopshire gave the Sahrs brothers a tour of the Renaissance Coliseum facilities prior to the signing ceremony and will serve as their primary team mentors throughout the season.
The boys were introduced to the Bradley Braves through Team Impact, a non-profit organization that gets sick kids together with their favorite college teams.
The boys parents, Timothy Sahrs and Kelly Belinger-Sahrs, have set up a Facebook page called Johnah’s Journey The Neuroblastoma Ninja’s Road to Recovery to document Johnah’s battle.
