November 22nd marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
James Robert “Jim” Leavelle is the detective who was escorting Lee Harvey Oswald through the basement of Dallas Police headquarters when his alleged presidential assassin was shot and killed. Now 90-years of age, Leavelle was handcuffed to Lee Harvey Oswald on that fateful day when Oswald was shot and killed by Jack Ruby.
Leavelle later recalled joking to Oswald before the transfer,
“‘Lee, if anybody shoots at you, I hope they’re as good a shot as you are.’ He kind of smiled and said, ‘Nobody’s going to shoot at me.'”
