Embattled New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie managed to hop from the pot directly into the fire on Saturday while trying to suck up to billionaire cash spigot Sheldon Adelson.
Republican governors and presidential wannabees Chris Christie (NJ), Scott Walker (WI) and John Kasich (OH) were all vying for attention from one of the 2012 campaign’s chief financiers during a meeting of the Republican Jewish Coalition on Saturday. (You might recall that Sheldon, a casino magnate who vowed to spend “whatever it takes” to defeat Obama in 2012, spent an estimated $150 million on the failed 2012 campaign.)
As reported by NBC, Christie tried to connect with the audience by speaking about a recent trip to Israel and insulted Adelson and the other audience members by calling Israel “occupied territory”.
“I took a helicopter ride from the occupied territories across, and just felt personally how extraordinary that was, to understand the military risk that Israel faces every day.”
NBC goes on to report that “When Christie made the remark Saturday, it set off murmurs through the crowd. Many supporters of Israel object to using the phrase ‘occupied territories’ to refer to the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.”
As expected, on Sunday Christie gave a “heartfelt” apology, but with any luck the damage is already done.
