New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand was selected at one of the 41 women who were named among the TIME’s 100 Most Influential People for 2014.
During a toast at the TIME 100 Gala on Tuesday, Gillibrand took the opportunity to speak about about the influence of thee women in her life: her mother, grandmother and Hillary Clinton.
Of her grandmother – the legendary Albany political figure Polly Noonan – Gillibrand said: “I learned from her you can do anything as long as you put your mind to it and work very hard.”
Of her mother – Polly Rutnik – Gillibrand said: “She taught me you have to be exactly yourself, you have to be the person you are and live your life as best as you can.”
And of Clinton – who Gillibrand said she has urged to run for president in 2016 – Gillibrand recalled hearing her statement in Beijing that “women’s rights are human rights and human rights are women’s rights…”
