Ken Ham, founder of the Creation Museum who debated “Science Guy” Bill Nye, is heading up a project to build a replica of Noah’s ark in Williamtown, Kentucky, a town of roughly four thousand people.
The Ark Encounter Project is estimated to cost about $73 million dollars funded through donations and a municipal bond.
In late February Ham announced that the municipal bond offering had raised enough money to begin construction on the Ark Encounter project, noting that his high-profile debate with Nye helped boost support for the project.
As reported by the Daily Mail, “Nye said he was ‘heartbroken and sickened for the Commonwealth of Kentucky’ after learning that the project would move forward.”
He said the ark would eventually draw more attention to the beliefs of Ham’s ministry, which preaches that the Bible’s creation story is a true account, and as a result, ‘voters and taxpayers in Kentucky will eventually see that this is not in their best interest.’
NBC News’ Kevin Tibbles reports on why a replica of Noah’s Ark is causing both excitement and skepticism about such a large display of faith in the public square in the video, below:
