The couple have also found themselves in the middle of a legal battle with the Internal Revenue Service that “could set an important precedent for the medical marijuana industry.”
The Davies owe $875,000 to the IRS that they are refusing to pay, opting instead to take up the matter in court. At issues is a law from 1982 based the assumption was anyone dispensing marijuana was trafficking in drugs regardless of whether they were in compliance with state law.
As Time reports, under this law “medical marijuana dispensaries are not allowed to deduct ordinary expenses—like rent or payroll or the cost of providing health benefits—which would normally be standard for a small business. “
The Davies are awaiting final disposition of the case by the court, vowing to appeal the matter if necessary. In the meantime, the couple continues to sell marijuana along with infused lollipops and continue spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
