“F-Word = Feminism. Feminism is the believe that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. ” ~Ms. Foundation
In honor of the Ms. Foundation’s 40th anniversary, Julie Hermelin produced and directed a web special with Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Q. Thomas, interim executive director of the Ms. Foundation, in conversation with Jen and Barb from the webseries, Momlife. In the show they discuss feminism in America, the historic progress that’s been made and the opportunities for the future.
This coincides with the Ms. Foundations campaign for universal child care. The United States is one of the few developed countries that offers no universal child care. At a time when low income single mothers are one of the fastest growing demographics, this is needed now more than ever.
The Ms. Foundation notes on their website that:
- Women still only make $.77 to every dollar a man makes which is an average of a million dollars less over a lifetime.
- The costs of child care in the U.S. are astronomical. Childcare costs have jumped almost 70 percent since the mid-1980s, based on constant 2011 dollars, the Census Bureau reported last year. As a result, paying for childcare may be increasingly out of reach.
- The U.S. is the only major industrialized country without universal childcare. We need to do better for women and for children.
