NFL’s DeAngelo Williams Is Doing Something Special For Breast Cancer Awareness Month (Video)

DeAngelo-Williams

Pittsburgh Steelers running back DeAngelo Williams is paying for the mammograms of 53 women for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Williams chose that number to honor his mother, Sandra Hills, who passed away from breast cancer at the age of 53 after a decade long struggle with the disease.

Williams had wanted to wear pink accessories all season to honor is mother, who passed away in May 2014, but the but the NFL denied his request, telling him that he could only wear pink accents during the month of October, which is designated by the NFL as its breast cancer awareness month.

Instead,  as The Daily Mail reports: “the generous sports star announced that The DeAngelo Williams Foundation will cover the cost of 53 mammograms at hospitals across Charlotte, North Carolina, and Pittsburgh.”

Sports Illustrated reports that: “The cost of a mammogram varies, but the national median cost is $243,” adding that “The Mayo Clinic says the exams “play a key role in early breast cancer detection and help decrease breast cancer deaths.”

The NFL, its clubs, players, the NFL Players Association, and the American Cancer Society are committed to saving lives from breast cancer and addressing the unequal burden of cancer in underserved communities through a campaign entitled “A Crucial Catch.

Our campaign, “A Crucial Catch,” in partnership with the American Cancer Society, is focused on the importance of regular breast cancer screenings. Throughout October, NFL games will feature players, coaches, and referees wearing pink game apparel, as well as additional on-field and in-stadium branding — all to help raise awareness for this important campaign. Much of the apparel worn at games by players and coaches, along with special game balls and pink coins, will be auctioned off at NFL Auction, with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society’s Community Health Advocates implementing Nationwide Grants for Empowerment and Equity (CHANGE) program.

You can watch a short news clip on the mammograms followed by a video by the NFL in which Williams explains his support for breast cancer awareness.
