Former Congressman Quits GOP, Vows To Convert Independents To Republicans?!

Tom-Tancredo-2

Conservative Logic 101: Step One, quit the GOP. Step Two, vow to spend the next twelve months converting independents to Republicans?! Only in Amerika.

Tom Tancredo, a former 5-term Republican congressman from Colorado and 2008 presidential candidate, announced his is leaving the Republican Party in a column he posted Friday on conservative website Breitbart.com.

Tancredo wrote that he was joining “the largest political group in the nation, unaffiliated Independents,” because “the Republican Party leadership” no longer fights for “the values and principles” of “smaller government, individual rights, fiscal responsibility, and free enterprise.”

Referring to the Republican Party as “the Party of Democrat Lite,” Tancredo listed a litany of reasons for his displeasure with the modern “Party of Lincoln and Reagan.”

“Sadly, it has become obvious that the Republican establishment simply has no intention of ever fulfilling promises made in platforms and campaign speeches,” he wrote, adding: “By insulting the grassroots, the GOP leadership has set upon a suicide mission. The problem is that failed leadership is allowing Obama to destroy the Constitution and take the whole country down the drain. Well, count me out.”

Tancredo continued: “The Boehner budget deal is the last straw, and enough is enough. I cannot any longer defend this transparently dishonest charade called the Republican Party.”

“What I will do instead is join the largest political group in the nation, unaffiliated Independents. In Colorado, they outnumber both ‘major’ political parties,” he stated, curiously adding:

The next day I will begin working my tail off for the next twelve months to organize Independents to help elect Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) as President of the United States. Cruz is the only candidate who both understands the left’s agenda and has demonstrated the courage to fight for our liberties, our sovereignty, and the survival of constitutional government. [emphasis added]

As an interesting footnote, The Denver Post reported that: “Whether the GOP actually misses Tancredo — one-time presidential candidate, a 10-year congressman, former state lawmaker and veteran of two Republican presidential administrations — is a different question.”

In 2010, he abandoned his party and launched an American Constitution Party bid for governor — a move that split the conservative vote with GOP candidate Don Maes and gave Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper an easy ride to victory.

He registered as a Republican again Jan. 18, 2011, according to voter records, and ran for the party’s nomination for governor in 2014, losing to, Bob Beauprez. More recently, he was embroiled in a failed push to force the resignation of the Colorado Republican Party chairman.

Conservative Logic 101 – gotta love it. Tancredo is leaving the Republican Party, yet is vowing to spend “the next twelve months” working to convince Independents to vote Republican.
