Donald Trump launched a brutal tirade against Hillary Clinton at a Monday campaign rally.
Republican front-runner Donald Trump launched a vulgar attack on Hillary Clinton at a Monday campaign rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
“Hillary – that’s not a president … everything that’s been involved in Hillary has been losses. You take a look. Even her race to Obama, she was gonna beat Obama,” Trump told the crowd, referring to the 2008 Democratic primaries.
He went on to use a Yiddish vulgarity to refer to Clinton’s primary loss to Obama, saying that she was “schlonged” by Barack Obama. [Schlong is a Yiddish term for male anatomy that comes from the German word “schlange” or “snake” in English.]
“I don’t know who would be worse, I don’t know. How does it get worse? But she was gonna beat — she was favored to win — and she got schlonged. She lost.”
Trump also made a series of crude references to Clinton’s bathroom break during Saturday’s Democratic debate. The Daily Mail reports that “According to multiple news reports, her belated reappearance at her podium was caused by the distance of the nearest ladies bathroom from the debate stage at St. Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire.”
Trump turned the unusual moment into a bizarre off-color joke
‘What happened to her?’ he wondered aloud. ‘I’m watching the debate, and she disappeared! I thought she quit! I thought she gave up! Where did she go? Where did Hillary go? They had to start the debate without her, phase two.’
‘I know where she went,’ he declared at last, saying: ‘It’s disgusting. I don’t want to talk about it.’
‘No, it’s too disgusting,’ Trump insisted, as audience members began shouting out variations on expressions for using the bathroom.
‘Don’t say it. It’s disgusting!’ he shouted back. ‘Let’s not talk about – We want to be very straight up, OK?’
‘But wasn’t that a weird deal?’
Trump when on to call Clinton “a liar,” adding she was “crooked.” He also argued that Clinton fears running against him although she and her campaign have claimed they would love to run against him.
He also told the audience to “ask Jeb Bush if he likes running against me…. Rick Perry…. Bobby Jindal…. Lindsey Graham…” all Republican candidates who have already dropped out of the race.
EDITOR’S NOTE: As a personal aside, I found myself horrified by the clear mob-mentality and hatred that spewed back-and-forth between Trump and the crowd. There were taunts and threats back-and-forth… calls for security “don’t hurt him,” followed by Trump explaining to the crowd that he was “just saying that for the cameras.” It’s really frightening to think that his brand of bigoted hate speech can draw such crowds and I have to wonder just how long it is going to take before one of his followers does something criminal… stupid… deadly.
UPDATE, 22DEC15 @10:00 a.m. Eastern: Clinton communications director Jennifer Palmieri said on Tuesday that the campaign is “not responding” to Trump’s comment that the Democratic frontrunner “got schlonged” in the 2008 presidential contest, calling it “degrading language” that others should condemn.
In a tweet, Clinton’s top communications aide said: “We are not responding to Trump but everyone who understands the humiliation this degrading language inflicts on all women should.”
