John Fugelsang reacts after Mississippi governor signs anti-gay law.

Comedian, actor and political satirist John Fugelsang is a Liberals Unite favorite who has taken on a mountain of issues over the years.

Mississippi’s Republican governor, Phil Bryant, signed a bill on Tuesday “signed far-reaching legislation allowing individuals and institutions with religious objections to deny services to gay couples,” as reported by The New York Times.

The Washington Post elaborated on the bill, reporting:

The new law states that it protects “sincerely held religious beliefs or moral convictions,” including the belief that marriage is only between a man and a woman and that sexual relations should only occur in such a marriage. It also says that a person’s gender is “determined by anatomy and genetics at time of birth” and goes on to say that businesses can determine who is allowed to access bathrooms, dressing rooms and locker rooms.

Fugelsang reacted immediately in a series of tweets, our favorite being: “ – The poorest state w/highest unemployment, most obesity and worst education just passed a law to protect themselves from gays.”

Curious, we took to the internet to fact-check Fugelsang’s tweet finding it fell well within the margin of error of published reports.

Mississippi is indeed the poorest state in the country, according to the latest information available from the US Census Bureau, with a median household income of  $39,680 and a poverty rate of 21.5%.

According to the United States Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, Mississippi is tied for next to the last place for unemployment along with the District of Columbia and West Virginia. However, the margin of error puts it well within the last place position held by Alaska.

The State of Obesity, a collaborative project of the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, ranks Mississippi as the third overall worst state for obesity. However, with an obesity rate of 35.5% and an error margin of 2.1% – statistically, Mississippi could be worse than #1 Arkansas, which has a rate of 35.9% and an error of margin of 2.1%.

When it comes to education, Mississippi ranks 49th out of the 50 states, with Nevada ranked the very worst. However, as those two states are neck-and-neck for last place – we are willing to give Fugelsang the benefit of the doubt on his last point, and we give his tweet an overall rating of “Mostly True.”
