Trump Nominee Mercilessly Mocked After Citing Grizzly Bears As Reason For Guns In Schools

Trump’s  Education Secretary nominee is mercilessly mocked on Twitter after she claims guns should be kept in schools to protect against grizzly bears.

Many questions loom regarding Betsy DeVos, Trump’s nominee to lead the Department of Education, not the least of which are her financial ties to the Republican National Committee.

As Vox reports, “DeVos is a billionaire who, along with her family, has donated $200 million to the Republican Party and conservative causes, according to Mother Jones.”

NBC News reports that Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), a vocal advocate of gun control since the Sandy Hook massacre, asked DeVos during Tuesday’s confirmation hearing whether she thought firearms had any place in or around schools.

She responded: “I think that’s best left to locales and states to decide.”

NBC News continued, reporting that:

Pressed on whether she could say “definitively” if guns shouldn’t be in schools, she referred to an earlier remark by Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) who mentioned an elementary school in Wapiti, Wyoming, that had erected a fence to protect children from wildlife.

“I think probably there, I would imagine that there’s probably a gun in the school to protect from potential grizzlies,” DeVos said.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) tweeted about the incident along with posting a video of DeVos talking about grizzlies:

Shortly after her comments, Twitter exploded with the hashtag #PotentialGrizzlies.
