Trump Just Put Democratic Control Of The Senate Into Play

Donald Trump

Unable to contain himself, Trump just pulled dirt into the hole Republican Senators have already dug for themselves regarding the assault allegations against his SCOTUS nominee.

For whatever inexplicable reason, Trump kept relatively quiet for days regarding attempted rape allegations lodged against Brett Kavanaugh, his Supreme Court nominee named to replace recently retired Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Trump had been giving a rather measured response to the allegations made by Professor Christine Blasey Ford, stunning his aides.

CNN reported on Thursday that:

White House aides who steeled themselves for what President Donald Trump would say when he finally addressed the sexual assault allegation against his Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh were quietly stunned when Trump said the process should be followed and the accuser should be heard.

In recent days, Trump has bragged about the positive coverage he’s received for his response, according to multiple sources. That response has contributed to him continuing to say Christine Blasey Ford should come forward with her story, they said.

However, on Friday, Trump reversed course and did what he does best in times of crisis – he headed over to his Twitter page to weigh in on the accusations, re-victimizing Ford along with way.

“Judge Brett Kavanaugh is a fine man, with an impeccable reputation, who is under assault by radical left wing politicians who don’t want to know the answers, they just want to destroy and delay. Facts don’t matter. I go through this with them every single day in D.C.” he began, adding: “I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents. I ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place!”

Those tweets seem consistent with reports regarding Trump’s private thoughts on the matter.

As CNN reported on Thursday, “Those who work closely with the President say he has privately voiced suspicion about the #MeToo movement and complained that decades-old allegations could ruin men’s lives in an instant. The President himself stands accused of various levels of sexual misconduct by 15 women, all of which he has denied.”

Ironically, CNN quoted Trump counselor Kellyanne Conway telling reporters there was “no reason” to attack Ford.

“There’s no reason to attack her. The president is defending his nomination to the United States Supreme Court as a man of character, integrity, impeccable academic and judicial qualifications,” Conway said when asked about Trump’s measured response to the allegations shortly before his Twitter tantrum.

A close friend and sometimes adviser, sent me a screenshot of the Tweets, writing of Trump: “He’s just pulling the dirt into the hole they’ve dug. Brilliant! He’s all but assured Democrats taking back the House of Representatives and has just put the Senate into play for Democratic control after the midterm elections.”

Twitter was quick to respond with several people expressing similar sentiment:

  • “Wow I knew it was just a matter of time before you blamed the victim! It’s almost like you want the Dems to win in November!”
  • “Thanks for galvanizing the last of the suburban women who were still hoping that you weren’t a flaming [redacted]. Suburban women vote. And they are leaving you in droves.”
  • “This tweet should go over really well with women voters. Good job as usual.”

Another Twitter user addressed his comment to Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan:

  • “Dear @SenateMajLdr & @SpeakerRyan: I hope you’re enjoying watching your illegit, crooked, corrupt sociopath president destroy your party and its chances in Nov. And you two are complicit and just as crooked. Congrats. Your party is DEAD.”
