Miss America Nina Davuluri will ‘rise above’ hate-filled, racist Twitter comments

The Miss America Pageant crowned its first winner with a background from India, sparking a slew of racist comments on Twitter. [You can see many of them here.]

Within minutes, the negative comments came flooding accusing Nina Davuluri  of Syracuse, New York, of not being  “American” while others called her a “terrorist.”

As reported by The Guardian,

“I’m so happy this organization has embraced diversity,” 24-year-old Nina Davuluri said in her first press conference, moments after winning the crown in Atlantic City. “I’m thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America.”

As for the negativity, she said, “I have to rise above that. I always viewed myself as first and foremost American.”
