Have Conservatives Become Archie Bunker? Videos

All-Family

Just like Archie Bunker used to do with Edith, it’s time for Americans to take a page out of an old All in the Family script and tell the GOP to “stifle.”

For those unfamiliar with the series, All in the Family was produced by Norman Lear and Bud Yorkin and revolved around the life of a loud-mouthed, working class, uneducated bigot, Archie Bunker, and his family.

His wife, Edith, is sweet but not the sharpest knife in the drawer. They and their daughter, Gloria, and her husband, Mike, all live in a working-class home. Unfortunately for Archie, he can’t avoid the people he disdains: His son-in-law — whom Archie calls “Meathead” — is an unemployed student and of Polish descent; the Jeffersons next door are black; Edith’s cousin Maude is a feminist; and, later, his partners in a local tavern are Jewish.

During its 8+ years on the air, the series became one of the most important programs of its time, taking on real-life conflicts (albeit in a comedic setting) otherwise considered taboo on American television at the time such as abortion, breast cancer, homosexuality, impotence, menopause, miscarriage, racism, rape, the Vietnam War, and women’s liberation.

The clear similarities between this ’70s representation of a right-wing bigot and the current conservative movement in America is mind-numbing (to say the least).

For instance, take a look at the clip below regarding equal pay and women’s liberation, paying particular attention to Archie’s reaction to discovering that he is earning the same wages as a woman.

And you are going to love how this next clip relates to the current national debate regarding firearms.

Didn’t it sound hauntingly familiar?

Now we all know that, for whatever reason, the GOP has become completely disconnected. But who would have guessed they would become a parody of a ’70s sitcom!

What are your thoughts?
