Angelina Jolie is speaking out about her decision to undergo a preventative double mastectomy after learning she carries the BRCA1 gene which increases the likelihood of developing breast cancer.
She wrote in a New York Times op-ed:
“My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in each woman. Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much as I could.”
Jolie lost her mother to ovarian cancer in 2007 and went on to explain in the op-ed that her six children contributed to her decision.
