The defense team for a rich teenager found guilty of killing 4 people while driving drunk successfully argued for treatment versus prison by claiming he suffered from “affluenza.”
The defense argued that Ethan Couch, 16-years-old at the time of the incident, was the “product of wealthy, privileged parents who never set limits for the boy,” according to CNN.
The court agreed with their defense and sentenced the rich teen to 10 years of probation and counseling noting that “he’s a defendant in need of treatment.”
Prosecutors, who had been seeking the maximum sentence of 20 years behind bars, were stunned by the sentence as were members of the victims’ families.
