Michigan Lawmaker Aims To Arm Abuse Victims

A Michigan lawmaker hopes to allow domestic abuse victims to carry guns, even in “gun free zones,” including schools and churches.

WEYI’s Walter Smith-Randolph reports that state representative Tim Kelly (R-Saginaw) wants to allow abuse victims to carry guns in these zones “but domestic violence workers say there may be other options.”

Tim Kelly told WEYI:  “Over 85-percent of women are victims of domestic violence Over 75-percent of women are stalking victims. [I] felt like this would be a good piece of legislation to take care of a vulnerable population.”

Valerie Hoffman of Saginaw’s Underground Railroad, who hasbeen counseling victims for 20 years, disagrees:

“It appears to me that we’re just giving up that protection—that responsibility for protection and just putting it on the victims to protect themselves. Why does she need to carry gun? Isn’t it society’s job to protect the victim?”
