Aberdeen, Washington, celebrated Kurt Cobain Day on Thursday, on what would have been his 47th birthday.

Controversy still engulfs the Nirvana frontman’s hometown nearly 20 years after his death.

According to a report by local network King 5, many would prefer to hide the town’s connection to the “controversial rock star” who “never spoke too kindly of the place” and ended up killing himself in 1994.

Aberdeen Mayor Bill Simpson disagrees who “proclaimed February 20, Cobain’s birthday, ‘Kurt Cobain Day’ in Aberdeen,” as reported by King 5. Simpson went on to tell the station:

“We should have done this a whole heckuva long time ago.”

[…]

“Yeah they [Nirvana] weren’t the best people,” said Simpson, “I’m not either.”

Simpson went on to explain his motivation for his proclamation: “To show the respect they deserve as being a part of our community.”

NBC News reports that:

A news report out of Seattle, two hours north of the singer’s boyhood home, underscored the mixed feelings that surround the commemoration of the iconic singer. The report opened by referring to Cobain as a “well-known heroin addict who shot himself nearly 20 years ago,” and then moved on to highlight an awkward concrete statue of the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” singer, complete with single tear running down the cheek, which was unveiled at the town’s Museum of History.

You can watch a news clip on the celebration, below, from King 5:
