Russell Crowe discussed his Biblical role of Noah in the Hollywood blockbuster and slams critics of the movie for their “absolute stupidity.”

The movie has come under fire from religious groups , complaining that it inaccurately depicts the well-known Biblical story.

Crowe took time on Wednesday morning to hit back at that criticism while speaking about the movie with Good Morning America. In particular, he addressed critics who had not even seen the movie yet:

“We’ve had probably over a year now of harsh criticism from a bunch of people who have put their name and stamp on an opinion that’s not even based on the movie or seeing the movie, just an assumption of what it could be or how bad it could be or, you know, how wrong it could be in their eyes. Which, you know, I think quite frankly is bordering on absolute stupidity.”

Crowe goes on to say that the film is a great piece of art that inspires debate about key issues:

“You come out of this movie and you want to talk…about our stewardship of the earth, our relationship to animals, what is spirituality, who am I in this world — all these fantastic subjects for conversation…Art that can do that for people is a wonderful thing.”

Crowe also praised Pope Francis for letting their an earlier “invitation” to meet “stand.”

“I think considering the controversy around this movie, it would have been so easy for the Vatican to rescind that invitation and just let it be that way, but the kindness to actually let the invitation stand, I thought it was just so consistent with who he’s been.”
