Freddie Gray Cop Had Guns Confiscated Twice After Threatening To Kill Self And Ex-Girlfriend’s Husband

Brian-Rice

Lt. Brian Rice, the highest ranking officer charged in connection with the death of Freddie Gray, allegedly threatened to kill himself and the husband of his ex-girlfriend, during a series of incidents that led to him being suspended and having his guns confiscated twice.

According to an article published Tuesday by The Guardian, Rice was “reportedly given an administrative suspension after being hospitalized for a mental health evaluation when he warned he was preparing to shoot himself in April 2012.”

Rice, 41, also received an internal discipline when a judge granted a temporary restraining order against him after a request from Andrew McAleer, the husband of Karyn McAleer, who is the mother of Rice’s young son and a fellow Baltimore police officer. Rice has been married to and divorced from two further women, according to court records.

That restraining order was initiated by a “sharply critical” 10-page complaint that was filed against Rice by Andrew McAleer in January 2013 that was published in full by The Guardian. The report details a “pattern of intimidation and violence” by Rice, as alleged by McAleer, a Baltimore firefighter.

In the report, McLeer writes – in part:

Within the last 30 days an event occurred, initiated by Brian Rice, that has caused me to have constant fear for my personal safety from Brian Rice. The January 19th 2013 incident and a pattern of harassment, stalking, trespassing, and serious threat of bodily harm by Brian Rice with a concealed Glock handgun that he is authorized to carry by Baltimore City Police Department are detailed in this plea for protection.

The pattern of harassment, stalking, trespassing, and fear of imminent harm or death from Brian Rice commenced on approximately late March 2012 and up to the most recent incident within 30 days; on January 19th, 2013.

The Guardian elaborated that “Rice was ordered to stay away from McAleer, his home and his workplace after a series of alleged confrontations, including one armed standoff in June 2012 when officers from two police departments responded to a 911 call and spent 90 minutes defusing the situation.”

Asked by The Guardian to confirm details of Rice’s suspensions, a Baltimore police spokesman said: “I can confirm that individual has been employed with Baltimore police department since 1997. He is currently suspended. I am not able to provide you with any other information on personnel issues.”
