Donald Trump says the U.S. should “start thinking about” using “racial profiling.”
Not satisfied with the controversy surrounding his proposed wall with Mexico and ban on Muslim immigration, Donald Trump is now giving the thumbs up to racial profiling.
Speaking by telephone with CBS’ Face the Nation, the presumptive Republican nominee said that he supported the use of racial profiling as a preventative measure in the wake of the recent Orlando nightclub tragedy.
“Well I think profiling is something that we’re going to have to start thinking about as a country,” Trump stated. “Other countries do it, you look at Israel and you look at others, they do it and they do it successfully. And I hate the concept of profiling but we have to start using common sense and we have to use our heads.”
“It’s not the worst thing to do,” he added.
In the same vein, Trump also addressed his renewed calls for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the U.S. in the interview, claiming that such a ban would have prevented attacks such as the Orlando nightclub tragedy – despite the fact that the shooter was born in the U.S.
He added that such attacks could be prevented if members of the Muslim community would “report” suspicious behavior:
When you look at, when you look at people within the Muslim community and where people are living and they don’t report, and a good example of that would be San Bernardino. I mean, they had bombs all over their apartment floor and people saw it and nobody reported them, and 14 people were killed, many injured.
Redirecting his attention to the Orlando shooting, Trump added that there were clear “red flags” surrounding Omar Mateen, the Orlando shooter, that members of the Muslim community should have picked up on and reported:
You look at his past, I mean? I’ve never seen a past quite like that. You look at his record in school, you look at a lot of other things. There were a lot of red flags, this was not a very good young man.
