When The Supreme Court decided that George W. Bush would be president in 2000, America as a whole didn’t realize what exactly was at stake. We’d been through many a Republican administration and remained a democratically run nation. That’s because old-school conservatives understood the meaning of compromise and weren’t trying to take over the country with a fascist regime. Sure, there was the Moral Majority and they preached the same anti-woman rhetoric we are hearing today, but they didn’t have the superpac Koch Brothers bankrolling their agenda. They were nothing more than a crazy judgmental fringe group. This fringe group grew when FOX “News” initiated their successful brainwashing platform in the 90s. They birthed the Tea Party and just like schoolyard bullies, they refused to back down and they screamed louder than any liberal—until now.
Obama utilized a careful strategy in his first four years. He knew he wasn’t going to wave a magic wand and clean up the Bush mess in his first term. He knew he needed to show Americans that despite his best efforts to compromise with the Party of No, he would more than likely not get them to work to raise this country out of the ditch into which we had been driven, so he tirelessly reached across the aisle only to get his hand slapped with a hot, iron rod. When he won in ’08, he said it would take more than one term, maybe even more than one president, to get us back to a firm economic footing. The sad and frustrating part is that too many of us liberals failed to show up for the 2010 midterms and we allowed the conservative cancer to spread. And boy, did it spread. It’s easy to blame them for everything but it was us; it was liberal apathy that allowed them the power.
In the past two years alone, Teapublicans have shown their blatant disregard for women, veterans, the elderly, the impoverished and basically anyone who isn’t part of the one percent. They call the rest of us ‘moochers and takers,’ all the while convincing themselves that they are the real patriots. They want America to return to the Leave It To Beaver world that only existed in fantasy. The Koch Bothers, Karl Rove, Dick Cheney and Rupert Murdock came eerily close to being the fascist dictators they secretly wish to be. But almost is just what it is. It’s a big, fat billion-dollar fail.
It takes a lot to piss liberals off enough to move to real action. We are always arguing amongst ourselves and trying to hug the hate away. I’ve heard it said that trying to organize liberals is like trying to herd cats. It’s true, but eventually it boils down to one vaginal probe too far and shit starts to hit the fan.
There are those who will argue that the 2012 re-election of Barrack Obama was not a mandate, but I believe it was. Gerrymandering kept the House from getting more Democrats and as long as Boehner, McConnell and Cantor try to hold us hostage, 2014 will be another victory for liberals. The public is awake and we’ve said ENOUGH. We are sick and tired of the bullies keeping us from the prosperity and equality we desire and deserve.
The liberal agenda is upon us and we need to stay awake and alert. The bullies are bruised but they are not going away. They just keep getting angrier and louder. They march in lockstep and do as they’re told, like any good foot soldier. They still have some power and it’s up to the adults in the room to keep them in their place. I think we will. I think we have. 2014 isn’t far away. It’s time to say goodbye to the Tea Party.
I leave you with the eloquent words written by Lawrence O’Donnell for the television show The West Wing:
“What did liberals do that was so offensive to the Republican party? I’ll tell you what they did. Liberals got women the right to vote. Liberals got African-Americans the right to vote. Liberals created Social Security and lifted millions of elderly people out of poverty. Liberals ended segregation. Liberals passed the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act. Liberals created Medicare. Liberals passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act. What did conservatives do? They opposed them on every one of those things. Every one. So when you try to hurl that label at my feet, ‘Liberal,’ as if it were something to be ashamed of, something dirty, something to run away from, it won’t work, Senator. Because I will pick up that label and I will wear it as a badge of honor.”
