Indiana GOP Seeks To Mandate Two Invasive Vaginal Probes: Rachel Maddow Weighs In (VIDEO)

Double-Ultrasound

aarom2One vaginal probe isn’t humiliating enough for women who choose to terminate their pregnancy in Indiana. Now Indiana Republican legislators want TWO!

The egregious Senate Bill 371 passed out of the Senate Committee with an approval of 7 to 5 sending it to a full vote in the State Senate.

Sen. Travis Holdman (R) introduced the bill that imposes strict regulations on clinics and physicians offering abortions. It requires an ultrasound before an abortion so the patient would see the heartbeat and another probe after the abortion to ensure she is no longer pregnant and the bleeding has stopped.

Dr. Anne Davis, the consulting medical director for Physicians for Reproductive Health, said the requirement was unnecessary and an undue burden on women. “She can do a blood test at any local facility after an abortion to show that the hormone levels are going down as they should, there’s no medical reason to make her drive back to the abortion clinic and go through another ultrasound,” she said. “This is yet another onerous, medically unnecessary barrier.”
