Huffington Post reports the State Senate in North Dakota passed a Personhood Constitutional Amendment initiative on Thursday that amends the state’s constitution and gives legal rights to human embryos.
Republican State Senator Margaret Sitte told Huffington Post, “We are intending that it be a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade, since Scalia said that the Supreme Court is waiting for states to raise a case.”
If the House passes the initiative, the voters in North Dakota will decide the outcome in 2014.
Personhood.net defines their intent:
“Personhood is the new prolife paradigmn (sic) for the 21st century. Personhood is a Christ-centric, biblical worldview approach to the issue of the sanctity of life. We believe that all innocent human life is exceptional and unique and must be recognized by law and embued (sic) with “rights and priviledges (sic).”
Protection for the ederly (sic) infirm, the disabled and pre-born humans at every stage of their biological development must be achieved in order to preserve human dignity and a respect for life in the culture. We are looking for people of passion, knowledge and action that are willing to sacrifice their time and talents to this important objective.
In order to realize the goal of a Personhood Amendment to the US Constitution, we must first build concensus (sic) state-by-state. There is a need…”
The Senate also passed a bill that would shut down the one remaining clinic that provides safe and legal abortions. Mississippi is also at risk of losing their only clinic by requiring abortion doctors to have admitting privileges at a local hospital. Hospitals near the clinic in Jackson are refusing the applications of doctors who perform abortions.
Sitte said “Yes, this bill could possibly close the abortion clinic [in Fargo]. I’m not saying that’s the intention of the law. The intention of the law is to ensure that women have adequate health care and the follow-up care that they need.”
Sarah Stoesz, the CEO of Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, had this to say:
“Politicians in North Dakota are wasting taxpayer time advancing what would no doubt become another divisive constitutional amendment with dangerous unintended consequences for North Dakota families. Planned Parenthood will continue to fight these legislative attacks on women’s health in partnership with a broad coalition of doctors, patients, teachers, lawyers and other concerned North Dakotans who do not want to see politicians inserting themselves into the private medical decision-making of women and families in our state.”
The goal of the North Dakota bills is to remove decades of progress and strip women of the rights they fought so hard to realize. Vote in 2014.
