Comedian Bill Maher received two rounds of boos from David Letterman’s audience on Tuesday after he told a couple of jokes mocking George Zimmerman in the wake of his acquittal for the shooting death of black teenager Trayvon Martin.
Maher was in New York City to watch the Major League Baseball All-Star Game and when Letterman mentioned that Maher was one of the owners of the New York Mets, whose is hosting the game, Maher noted that he is only a “minority owner,” which is “better than being a minority in Florida.”
Maher asked “Why are they booing?” seconds later as the crowd booed and hissed.
Maher received more boos and catcalls later in the show when he complained that Zimmerman’s firearm – the one he used to kill Trayvon Martin – could be returned to him under Florida law:
‘You know that they want to give George Zimmerman a gun now?’
‘The Florida state law is that he can get his gun back. I say that if he gets a gun, Casey Anthony gets a baby.”
You might recall that Casey Anthony was acquitted in July 2011 of killing her 2-year-old daughter Caylee.
