Government Shutdown: Tea Party Republicans Hitting New Lows (POLL)

According to Republican talking heads, the mainstream media is to blame for the negative view of the GOP. It would not serve them to admit they are disliked because they have shut down the government, or continually attack women’s rights, or take food stamps away from the poor. It wouldn’t be prudent.

It’s much easier to blame the media. But the numbers don’t lie.

A Quinnipiac poll reveals a bleak outlook for the Republican government shutdown.

“American voters oppose 72 – 22 percent Congress shutting down the federal government to block implementation of the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare.”

When asked “If the election for the U.S. House of Representatives were being held today, would you vote for the Republican candidate or for the Democratic candidate in your district?”

Voters said they would pick a generic Democrat over a generic Republican 43% to 34%.

American voters trust President Obama more than Republicans in Congress on a number of issues:
  • 63 – 26 percent on helping low income families;
  • 51 – 38 percent on helping the middle class;
  • 47 – 38 percent on handling health care;
  • 47 – 42 percent on handling the economy.

Quinnipiac pointed out: “In general, the Republican brand is down as evidenced by the Democrats’ unusually large lead in the so-called generic ballot. But we have 13 months before an election can translate this public opinion edge into electoral gains and in politics that amount of time is forever.”

Last week Gallup reported a record low for Tea Party support at 22%.

“Opponents of the Tea Party now outnumber supporters 27% to 22%, which is similar to their edge in 2012. However this differs from most of Gallup’s earlier measurements, in 2010 and 2011, when supporters and opponents were either equally matched, or Tea Party backers had the slight edge.”

President Obama can avert the next debt ceiling crisis by invoking the 14th Amendment.

Section 4. The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. But neither the United States nor any State shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void.”

It appears he may. His language as of late has taken a harsher tone and it doesn’t appear he’s caving. We will have to wait and see.

It is very clear the GOP is caught between a rock and the billion dollar funded Tea Party hard place. Republican centrists are ignored. The big money is behind the right-wing extremists like Ted ‘Rafael’ Cruz. The hope and misguided belief is that if a Tea Party darling, such as Cruz, is on the 2016 ticket, they will win and win big. They choose not to look at what America wants. They are blinded by Koch brothers dollars. And as far as you’re concerned – who cares. They have theirs.

Midterm elections usually have a poor attendance. 2014 is set to break some records, but in order to make a real difference and boot out the Tea Party Taliban, progressives HAVE TO SHOW UP AND VOTE. We must make the effort to help folks get to the polls as well as making sure voter registrations are filled out and turned in on time. Vote early, don’t wait until the last minute. If your state allows for a mail-in ballot, do it. You can bet that as the elections approach, the GOP will make it as difficult as possible for progressives to cast their ballots. Don’t let them win. They don’t care about you – in fact, they are banking on the hope that you will see government as a lost cause, feel powerless and not show up.
