Imagine: It’s a mundane weekday and you are shopping at your local Whole Foods. While contemplating which cucumber looks the most delectable, you hear a commotion that grabs your attention.
The words “Stop buying stuff” are echoing through the store and as you walk away from the vegetable aisle, you see Matthew Silver, beating a drum, wearing only a pair of green Speedo-like briefs and running shoes. Dancing like there’s no tomorrow, Silver is spreading his message of love. Much like Jesus did but with a cracked sense of humor.
He urges people to stop buying stuff and that love is the answer – all while busting a move in unexpected retail establishments like Forever 21.
Whether or not Matthew’s humor and activism impresses you or makes you cringe, it is clear that the self-described clown has figured out how to disrupt in a non-violent and peaceful way. He’s impossible to ignore and judging by the reactions of the crowds, no one feels threatened by him. The worst reaction he receives in this video is from store security who mostly seem confused and annoyed.
On his website, maninwhitedress.com, he describes his mission:
My role as a clown, trickster and village idiot is to parody excessive seriousness by playing with taboos, rules, and social norms. My inspiration comes from my heart. I perform for smiles and laughter, loosening people’s armor, and opening up a portal for imagination, creativity and love.
This is one of many videos. Enjoy!
