Johns Hopkins To Pay $190 Million To Women Whose Pelvic Exams Were Secretly Recorded

aarom10Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD has agreed to pay a $190 million settlement to more than 8,000 patients whose gynecological exams were secretly recorded by Dr. Nikita Levy.

Authorities are saying that Levy used a pen-like camera that he wore around his neck to videotape and photograph women’s bodies in the examination room.

After an employee alerted hospital authorities about her suspicions, Dr. Levy was fired in February 2013. Levy committed suicide as the case was being investigated and he was never charged.

Authorities are reporting that there is no evidence Levy shared the approximate 1,200 videos and the 140 pictures with anyone else.

Lead attorney Jonathan Schochor said, “All of these women were brutalized by this. Some of these women needed counseling, they were sleepless, they were dysfunctional in the workplace, they were dysfunctional at home, they were dysfunctional with their mates. This breach of trust, this betrayal—this is how they felt.”

This is one of the largest class action settlements recorded in United States history involving sexual misconduct by a doctor.
