Victims of sexual assault face a new kind of assault when they report being raped. They are judged unfairly and asked presumptive questions like, “Had you been drinking?”
Cynthia Kao created a video that highlights the absurd and insulting responses from law enforcement when a person reports a sexual assault.
In the video, police officers are called when a man’s laptop is stolen. The officers question him as they would a rape victim. In other words, they suggest that the robbery was his fault – that he asked for it.
“Flashing your goods for all the world to see? Kinda sounds like you were asking for it,” one officer says when the victim says his laptop was left in front of a window.
