The Cleveland police chief is speaking out about lax gun laws in the wake of the accidental slaying of a one-year-old by a three-year-old.
Trashawn Robinson told NBC News that Braylon Robinson was “always smiling” during his short life, adding “he kept everyone happy.”
Robinson continued, explaining that Braylon was being watched by his mother along two of her friend’s children when the three-year-old got his hands on the gun and shot the younger child in the face.
The mother was in the same room with the children but had her back turned until she heard the shot and according to a police statement she “then observed the victim lying on the floor bleeding. A handgun was recovered from the room near the 3 year old child.”
Police also noted that the person responsible for the gun could face possible criminal charges.
Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams stated that “it’s a sad day for Cleveland” at a news conference after the shooting, adding:
Currently we’re investigating where this firearm came from. We’re also investigating how this tragedy actually happened. But everybody has to know that this fascination we have with handguns, not just in this city but in this country, has to stop.
This is a senseless loss of life in this city again, and it’s directly related to guns, and we need to really take a hard look at the things that we’re doing out there on the state, local and the national level to get these guns out of our communities. Nothing good ever happens.
