The Family Council Action Committee is planning to give the first annual Power of Courage Award to Republican Arkansas State Representative Justin Harris and his colleague Charlene Fite on August 12, 2015. The awards will be distrubuted at a Republican event headlined by presidential hopeful U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz.
According to a press release from the Family Council, the two will be recognized “for exhibiting their Christian faith and values in legislation they presented at the Arkansas State Capitol during the 90th General Assembly,” and they “demonstrated courage by standing strong in faith when situations were tough at the State Capitol.”
From the press release: “Representative Harris is the owner and founder of Growing God’s Kingdom Preschool in West Fork and is serving his 3rd term as state representative. He has always been a strong advocate for home schoolers and the unborn. Even when opposed by the liberal media, Representative Harris has always held firm and stood tall in his faith. No one can deny Representative Harris’ faith has always led him while serving at the Arkansas State Capitol. In 2015, Harris sponsored the Parental Involvement Enhancement Act, requiring parents to be involved in their children’s decision to terminate life by requesting an abortion. This is now law today. Representative Harris will not be seeking re-election.”
You may remember the controversy surrounding Harris that was reported in the Arkansas Times earlier this year. Harris and his wife, Marsha, adopted two little girls (three and six-years-old) who had previously been in foster care. In March 2013, Harris shared photos of the newly adopted girls on some of his social media accounts – the photos have since been deleted. By October of that same year, for an unknown reason, the Harrises decided they didn’t want the girls they adopted anymore, so they decided to “rehome” them, which means they legally gave the girls to another family – Eric and Stacey Francis. Eric Francis, who had worked as head teacher at Harris’ Growing God’s Kingdom Preschool, was charged with sexually assaulting the oldest adopted daughter in April 2014.
Eventually the controversy led to a new law forbidding parents from turning custody of adopted children over to any other household without court permission, except when kids are placed with close relatives.
