In their ongoing crusade to discredit Planned Parenthood, Republicans continue to manipulate the truth. In other words, all they have are lies, lies and more lies.
Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee overpowered their Republican colleagues on Thursday, temporarily blocking testimony from an anti-Planned Parenthood abortion doctor who served as a witness during a hearing overseen by anti-choice Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ).
Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.), protested a graphic video about abortion procedures that was shown to the committee by witness Dr. Anthony Levatino.
“This witness has played a tape that he has now admitted under oath was not prepared in connection with Planned Parenthood at all and I ask that it be stricken from the record of this hearing,” Cicilline said.
The five minute video included a graphic conversation between a clinician and a young woman who was seeking an abortion at 27 weeks. The woman was told the procedure would cost $8,000 and would increase $1,000 per week.
When questioned, Dr. Levatino admitted the clinic mentioned in the video was not Planned Parenthood.
Cicilline called a vote to strike the video from the record. Because more Democrats were in the hearing room than Republicans at that time, the vote passed. Nine Democrats voted to remove the video testimony, compared to seven Republicans who voted to keep it.
Their victory was brief – within minutes several Republican committee members returned to the hearing and called for another vote and the testimony was put back into the record.
“It was just a little bit of parliamentary maneuvering by Democrats there,” a Republican committee aide said.
So voting to remove false and misleading testimony is now considered “parliamentary maneuvering.” More proof that Republicans use lies to make their pathetic, anti-choice arguments. Truth is not on their side.
