A new survey conducted by Data Targeting found that an Independent candidate would start off with 21% of the vote in the 2016 general election.
This election season is one for the books. Donald Trump is the presumptive Republican nominee, and he represents the anti-establishment bloc of the GOP. Hillary Clinton is the Democratic front-runner, and she represents the status quo establishment. This leaves a huge portion of the electorate feeling as if they don’t have a viable candidate to choose from.
Trump and Clinton have one thing in common; they both have high unfavorability ratings – 55 percent for Trump and 56 percent for Clinton. Additionally, six in ten voters surveyed are not satisfied with Clinton or Trump, and they want another option in November.
Here’s a sampling of some of the key findings:
58 % of respondents are dissatisfied with the current group of Republican and Democratic candidates for President.
55 % of respondents favor having an independent presidential ticket in 2016.
A shocking 91% of voters under the age of 29 favor having an independent candidate on the ballot.
65 % of respondents are at least somewhat, pretty or very willing to support a candidate for President who is not Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton.
In a ballot test against Clinton and Trump, a truly independent candidate starts off with 21% of the vote.
This number increases to 29% in the “Big Sky” region, 30% in “New England” and 28% in the “West” region.
The survey was conducted May 12-15 . There were 997 respondents with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
