Preaching about intolerance towards those who would persecute gays for religious reasons, Michele Bachmann (R-MN) told Yahoo News she thinks it’s wrong that Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) vetoed a bill that would have allowed businesses to legally refuse service to same-sex couples because of religious objections.
Citing tolerance for both sides of the debate, the Tea Party favorite was quoted as saying: “I believe that tolerance is a two-way street, and we need to respect everyone’s rights, including the rights of people who have sincerely held religious beliefs.”
Talking Points Memo elaborated on Bachmann’s motive for this position reporting:
Asked why her view seemed to be in the minority among Republicans — both Arizona senators and former presidential nominee Mitt Romney spoke out against the bill — Bachmann suggested its dissenters were on the wrong side of the issue.
“Religious liberties and the protection of our religious liberties is right,” she said. “Right now, there’s a terrible intolerance afoot in the United States, and it’s against people who hold sincerely held religious beliefs.”
